Welcome to Aptos, a charming unincorporated town in southern Santa Cruz County nestled between Capitola and Watsonville. Aptos is best known for its bluff-backed beaches and long surf break. It’s also home to Cabrillo College, a well-regarded feeder school to UC Santa Cruz. You can live within walking distance of the beaches or in the hills with sweeping views of Monterey Bay. When searching for your dream Aptos homes for sale, you should know that Aptos real estate is generally divided into little villages that include Seacliff, Seascape, Rio del Mar, Aptos Hills-Larkin Valley, Aptos Village, and Cabrillo.
8 Things We Love About Living in Aptos
Hike or bike along 30 miles of trails winding through this peaceful forest of second- and third-growth redwoods, which are still recovering from turn-of-the-century clear-cutting. You can picnic along Aptos Creek, visit the moss-covered Fern Grotto, or find the giant fallen Advocate Tree, which is estimated to be 1,000 years old.
Stroll the long stretch of beach, fish off the pier, and wonder at the massive concrete freighter ship called the SS Palo Alto, which was built at the end of World War I and is slowly eroding.
Sand, surf, firepits, dogs chasing balls, and expansive views of Monterey Bay – what’s not to love? Keep an eye out for migrating gray whales between January and April. Aptos real estate in the Rio Del Mar area is highly sought-after thanks to opportunities to own homes by the beach, up above the bluffs with views, or adjacent to Seascape Golf Club.
Another day in paradise on an expansive beach backed by beautiful bluffs. Long beach-breaking waves are popular with surfers and boogie boarders but watch for strong rip currents. It’s a popular camping spot, too.
OMG, we cannot get enough of Companion’s sourdough, their pastries with seasonal fruits, and steaming cups of Blue Bottle coffee!
Named one of “The Coast’s Best Farmers Markets” by Coastal Living Magazine, the Saturday morning market on the Cabrillo College campus is not to be missed. Seasonal strawberries, mmmm…
If you’re a fan of pinot noirs, make reservations to taste Armitage’s award-winning wines produced in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Aptos Village is a quaint shopping, dining, and housing enclave. It’s where you’ll find New Leaf Community Market and award-winning chef David Kinch’s relatively new restaurant Mentone. Kinch is probably the best-known chef in Silicon Valley; his Manresa restaurant in Los Gatos earned three Michelin stars. Aptos Village also is home to the Annual Santa Cruz American Music Festival and the Fourth of July World’s Shortest Parade. More development is planned for the village, so stay tuned.
